Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Italian Greyhounds need to be rehomed?
Usually because there has been a change in circumstances, some are inappropriately homed in the first place and occasionally they are just discarded.

Are they always older dogs?
We rehome dogs of any age, and occasionally have young Italian Greyhounds to find a new home for.

How long do Italian Greyhound's live?
The average life span is 13 - 15 years but it is not unusual for them to live to 16 - 17 years of age.

How much exercise do they require?
Puppies and young dogs are very active and require both mental and physical stimulation. Older dogs are happy to adapt to the activeness of their owners, but they do still require a daily walk.

What sort of diet do Italian Greyhounds need?
They are not generally fussy eaters, but they enjoy a varied diet of meat, biscuit and vegetables. Some people prefer to feed a complete biscuit suitable for small dogs. Fresh drinking water should always be available.

Do Italian Greyhounds need particular attention on a regular basis?
Minimal grooming is required but teeth and nails require regular attention.

Are they good with children?
Italian Greyhounds generally are happy with gentle children but they need to understand that they cannot tolerate rough handling and can be easily injured if dropped.

I am in my late 70's can I be considered to rehome a rescue Italian Greyhound?
We look carefully into each prospective adoption. If you are active and enjoy a daily walk and have relatives/friends who live close by and who share your love of the breed, then we will consider your application alongside that of a younger person.
Older people are usually more suited to an older rescue and the Rescue maintains lifelong contact with each dog we rehome.

Are Italian Greyhounds known to cause problems for people who suffer from allergies?
Because they have a short fine coat, which is so short it can hardly be seen, it is unlikely that they would adversely affect a person with an allergy.

I have large dogs; can an Italian Greyhound run with them?
Italian Greyhounds get along well with cats and dogs of a similar size, but must be protected from larger boisterous dogs. Their fragile frame and athletic speed can be fatal when combined with that of a larger dog.
We strive to ensure 'rescued' Italian Greyhounds get the love and attention they deserve from their human companions. We are therefore mindful of this need when selecting homes for rescues.

What about accidents?
Italian Greyhounds are small sight hounds; they should be allowed free exercise in a safe environment away from traffic and the threat of being chased by larger dogs.
Your garden should not have any hidden dangers such as pot holes. Italian Greyhounds have long slim boned legs which can easily fracture when combined with speed or a fall.

Can I leave my Italian Greyhound alone whilst I am out at work all day?
No, they need constant companionship and are definitely not suited to being left for long hours.

Can Italian Greyhounds be kept outside?
No, this is a breed which must be kept indoors. They need warmth, a cosy bed and a warm coat in colder weather.
